About Žemaitija National Park

Established in 1991, Žemaitija National Park is Lithuania’s oldest national park, located in the historical region of Žemaitija (Samogitia) in the northwest part of the country. Covering approximately 213 square kilometers, the park encompasses a mosaic of glacial landscape features, including 25 lakes, forests, rolling hills, peat bogs, and meadows. The park’s centerpiece is Lake Plateliai, Lithuania's largest natural lake, which offers crystal-clear waters and opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming. The surrounding forests and wetlands provide habitat for a variety of wildlife including elk, deer, wild boar, beavers, and numerous bird species such as white-tailed eagles and cranes. Rich cultural history defines the park area, with archaeological sites, traditional wooden architecture, and the historic village of Plateliai featuring museums and local crafts. Visitors enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, and pleasant scenic drives along quiet rural roads. The park’s trail network includes both easy and more challenging routes that highlight idyllic lakeshore vistas, natural springs, and panoramic hilltop views. Žemaitija National Park also emphasizes sustainable tourism and environmental education through its visitor center and guided tours. Winter offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities, attracting nature lovers year-round. With its blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, Žemaitija National Park remains a treasured destination for those seeking tranquility, adventure, and a connection to Lithuania’s natural and historical roots.
